Portraits of Sancreed Community

In January 2024 justlife.art relocated to the beautifully characterful Sancreed Village Hall (SVH). We bloody love it!

Alongside other courses and workshops, we started a weekly portrait group….. some of us having attended a portrait course with Jason Walker RP in 2023 and keen to get some regular practice in. We modelled for each other…… which helped us to get to know each other better, as well as providing more experience and understanding of what it is like for portrait sitters. Plus it kept the cost down not having to pay for a model and therefore made it financially accessible to a wider range of people.

We are a friendly and down to earth bunch with experience ranging from beginners right through to those starting to accept commissions as professional artists. The sessions are untutored, however we are supportive and helpful to those with less experience that want to take the plunge and have a go (and the very first session of each term we aim to dedicate our knowledge and time to supporting anyone who is new to portrait and just wants to have a go).

Although some of us would have been happy to keep painting each other ad infinitum, others were keen to gain experience of painting a variety of people and we began to think about how to reach out and ask others to come and sit for us. Having fallen in love with Sancreed itself as well as the friendly residents, who have all made us feel so very welcome at SVH and around and about, we wondered if we might invite Sancreed parish folk to come and sit for us in exchange for them being able to choose their favourite portrait of themselves to keep, following an exhibition ….. once we have painted everyone. Our Portraits of Sancreed Community Project was hatched.

SVH putting out an email to everyone, and a couple of us beginning to knock on a few doors, and so far we have had a great response….and have already painted many residents (some examples below). We ask each resident to sit for two or more consecutive Tuesday sessions, either the morning or afternoon.

Those wishing to attend the Tuesday sessions to paint/draw portraits have to sign up for the whole term, however, we are putting on taster sessions on Tuesday 7th January 2025 where those of us with a little more experience can support beginners to have a go without pressure in a relaxed environment, and for anyone with a bit of experience can just come and check us out without commitment. We are not trained tutors and are very much all in a development phase of learning, though we have some who exhibit and sell.

justlife.art is an ethical and socially just organisation with an incredibly strong inclusion ethos and we are gradually devising more of an intention that will guide this ‘Portraits of Sancreed Community’ project….that will focus on how engaged in community people are….what community means for them, any barriers…marginalisation etc.…..and it could be a bit like a Census in Portrait, with a substantive exhibition at the end of the project (venue of exhibition yet to be worked out). This will be when sitters will be able to choose their favourite portrait of themselves to keep (post exhibition). With more regular mini exhibitions at SVH so people can see what we are up to and enquire.

If anyone is interested in attending but unsure about it feel free to give me, Rose, a call on 07711961624 or email me: rose@justlife.art . And for any of you Sancreed Parish Residents who are wanting to come and sit for us then please get in touch with me too.

What is provided?

All equipment, paper and dry materials are provided but feel free to bring any favourites of your own. If you are wanting to paint (most of us do) please bring your own ground and paints and rags and brushes etc. A selection of teas and coffee, organic milk and plant based milk, plus a selection of treats are also provided, though we are encouraging everyone to take it in turns to make some treats if they feel moved to. We may need to get a bit of a rota going for this..
