About the Workshop & Tutor
James is both a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Contemporary British Portrait Painters as well as being on the faculty of Heatherley School of Art, hence bringing a wealth of portrait painting and teaching experience with him. You can find more about James here.
The course will primarily be an introduction into James’ own methods, techniques and materials for painting in oils on gesso board. Over the course of the five days he will illustrate through practical demonstrations his process from beginning to end. This will include; surface preparation, the materials he uses, paint, brushes, solvents and surface grounds.
Working from the life model we will discuss planning a portrait/half figure and full figure, considering size, scale and composition. Starting with the importance and purpose of preliminary/working drawings, which, like many, James sees as the most important part of making a successful painting. Spending time and effort at this early stage will give us the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the model and to foresee and avoid any obstacles or mistakes we may encounter when starting our painting.
Using initial working drawings James will explain how he uses these to start a painting, how he chooses a ground, paint mixing, application and glazes, his choice of colours, brushes and painting medium and why they are suited to painting on gesso board.
Although James’ technique is quite specific and technical he doesn’t like to be too prescriptive in how he teaches, anticipating that each student can take something from how he paints and adapt it to their own way of working.
