Ashley Hold
Expert tutor
Ashley’s work has been exhibited in the BP National Portrait Award, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and been a prize winner in the Discerning Eye and Hunting Competitions. He founded and co-organised Open Studios (sw).
Having grown up in Falmouth, just a couple of doors along from Falmouth School of Art, Ashley went on to study Foundation, BA Hons Fine Art and Masters in Twentieth Century Art and Design; Histories & Theories at Falmouth, eventually teaching there.
Looking at the history of art as well as drawing and painting directly from the subject were the two main elements of his studies as a student, and continue to be the focus of his activity today. Some might consider representational work belies imagination, yet it is far from a passive process, with a myriad of decisions in terms of subject choice, how to render in shape, tone and colour, and managing the tension between visual fact and the structural requirements of the image.
Ashley has a wealth of teaching knowledge and experience and his focus is on bringing awareness to and changing the thought behind the action of drawing.
He now lives and works in a village in the mountains near Madrid with his Spanish wife.
